About Us

When passion for art becomes a raging fire within, it often leads to something spectacular. Green Room Theatre Cultural Society (popularly known as GRT in the theatre circle too, finds the roots of its existence in similar sentiments. Determined to do theatre that has the power to move people, shake beliefs and compels one to think, our director Mr. Anjan Kanjilal, joined by his team of loyal believers, formed GRT.

Our journey began in 18th May 2009 in New Delhi with our first play Bismillah and since then we have successfully staged several Bengali plays within India and overseas, some of them being Sahabashey, Asukh, Ebong Shatarupa, Prayaschitto and SheshRakkha. Our forte lies in contemporary, classical as well as neo-classical productions, most of them being self-scripted.

GRT comprises of an assorted group of people from different walks of life and various age groups, but who are united in thoughts and their passion for theatre. Our varied backgrounds, talents and personalities are often reflected in our plays.

GRT currently has 9 running productions- 6 full length and 5 short plays. It has staged over 92 shows in various parts of the country to full houses. GRT is also, the only Bengali theatre group from Delhi that was invited to participate in the Bangladesh cultural fiesta in March 2017.

We believe that theatre is as much about learning, understanding and researching as it about performing. Apart from promoting Bengali art and culture it is imperative for a theatre group to bring together a milieu of performances transcending the borders of language and form.

GRT has therefore, successfully conducted its maiden endeavor of bringing an International Bengali Theatre Festival to Delhi in April 2016. This was the first of its kind and saw Bengali theatre groups from various parts of India – like Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and also from across the border – Bangladesh. We have also participated in national and international theatre festivals.

GRT has been conducting numerous workshops for the privileged as well as under-privileged theatrical talents.
