Founder, Director & Actor


One of the most prominent and radical theatre directors & actors of the contemporary Indian Bengali theatre, Anjan Kanjilal has carved his wn niche in th field of creative drama through his unique & innovative direction & acting style. He is an Alumni of Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, West Bengal and compleated his Hons & MA in Dramatic Studies. PhD running in ‘1875-1925- The Golden Period of Bengali Theatre’ from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata, West Bengal


His work includes:

  • Founder/Director of Green Room Theatre (18th May, 2009) has done 93 shows till date across the country and Bangladesh with conceptualization & show designing to his credit.

  • Worked with almost all leading & renowned Theatre Directors in India, Kumar Roy, Manoj Mitra, Rudra Prasad Sengupta, Deb Narayan Gupta, BV Karanth to name a few.

  • Worked with highly acclaimed International Theatre Directors like Peter Bruck, Mr. Toshi, Marshal Marshue & Mr. Curior.

  • An ex-founder member & director of Naksha (WB), Aakriti (New Delhi)

  • Has successfully completed more than 200 shows including his directorial bests such as Sundor, Shesh Rakkha, Bismillah, Sahobase, Asukh, Natya Range, Ebong Satarupa, Prayashchitto and much more.

  • Participated in more than 16 National & International festivals both as a Director & Actor

  • His research story ‘Brothel’ is now a full-fledged National feature film.

  • Conducted numerous theatre workshops & seminars along with teaching the benefits of ‘Theatre In Education’ in over 40 schools.

  • Recently organized the first ever International Bengali Theatre Festival in New Delhi to encourage & preserve the tradition. Key highlights*- Prosenjit Chatterjee, Kirti Jain, Priyanshu Chatterjee , Theatre Groups from Bangladesh, Kolkata and much more.

  • Recently conducted special Theatre Workshops on Effortless Acting

  • In September 2018 he was invited to coach more than 50 theatre artists to Dhaka Bangladesh.

  • In the year 1990, awarded as the Best District (Eastern Zone) Director
  • In the year 1991, got the Youth Festival National Award for Direction – ‘ Kati Patang’
  • In the year 2012, Anukriti Excellence Award for Direction (Bengali)
  • In the year 2014, Piklu Arts Excellence Award for Best Director
  • Recipient of various other awards (more than 60) and felicitations including Govt. of West Bengal
